Great North Pie Co.’s Neil Broomfield is not your average pie maker. His journey has seen him train to be a surveyor and become a policeman, patrolling the streets of Manchester, before his heart took him back to where it all began – the kitchen.
Although having worked in Michelin starred restaurants, Neil is mostly self-taught, researching and developing pies in his home kitchen. Starting with the pastry, he decided on an all butter recipe and a traditional, straight sided Scotch pie shape.
Neil then commissioned custom made pie tins to create the perfect pie, with the sides of the pie just short of 3 fingers deep (the ideal size for a mouthful, according to Heston Blumenthal in his TV series on making the perfect burger).
Sourcing some of the finest ingredients from the North, Neil began by selling at local farmer’s markets and to fellow Greater Manchester police officers. From these humble beginnings, Neil has turned Great North Pie Co. into one of the most exciting new fine food producers around. There is no set menu for his handcrafted multi-award winning pies which, in only a few years, have received great critical acclaim.
Setting new standards with his unique and ambitious recipes, Neil has gone on to win five categories at the British Pie Awards, and scooped the prestigious title of North West Fine Food Producer of the Year in a competition judged by the Great British Menu winner, Nigel Haworth.
What next for the future of the Great North Pie Co.?
Neil and the team have no plans to be the biggest company, they simply want to be one of the best pie makers in the country.
